Paid External Link (or Paid Linking)

Glossary of Web Design Terms

Paid external links are links to your web site from other sites that you pay for.

Paid External Link (or Paid Linking)

Paid external links, sometimes called text ads or banner ads, are links to your web site from other web sites that you pay for. These external links are usually in the form of "banner ads" or graphics that link to your site, but can also be text ads that you pay for on another web site.

Why Does This Matter to Me?

Paid linking can be an important part of your overall SEO strategy, and can be an important method for driving traffic to your web site.

Text ads usually have a more positive impact on SEO (search engine optimization) than graphical banner ads. But the search engines can usually tell that these placements are paid for, and therefore the value of these external links from a SEO standpoint is reduced.

These external links also still have value to your site because it is another link that users can find and click on to reach your site.
